Show your Heart campaign
The aim of the ‘Show Your Heart’ action is for groups around the UK to come together to demonstrate public support for a kinder approach to refugees in a simple, visual and public way. Local groups will let their MPs know that the public want a more compassionate approach to refugees. Hopefully, this will influence MPs over the coming months while they consider the Nationality and Borders Bill in Parliament.
Signs of support for refugees will be gathered by local groups and presented in orange heart displays at landmarks around the country. This photo from Norwich City of Sanctuary (below) is a great example of this work, but there are many ways to approach this idea and to adapt to your own setting (see campaign pack). In the pack, you can also find ideas of how to involve and engage your MP.
Photos of the orange heart displays and details of local groups’ activities will be brought together for everyone to see, and promoted through the media, social media (using hashtags #TogetherWithRefugees and #WhoWeAre), and on this website. We'll provide details of how and where you can submit your orange hearts soon.

Support week of action and rally 18-24 October
Activities will be ramped up in the week 18-24 October. While parliament debates the Bill, some groups will reveal their orange heart dislays, others will reach out to the public for signs of support and there will be a rally on parliament square. You can support these activities in one of three ways:
1) Organise a local Show Your Heart event on 20 October
Over the coming months we want to send a loud and clear message to the government that the public want the UK to offer protection to people forced to flee their homes – and reject the cruel approach of the Bill. Could you organise Show Your Heart event to coincide with the rally on 20 October (see below) or at some point during the Week of Action.
2) Write to your MP asking for a meeting to discuss the Bill
Use the Week of Action and the return of Parliament as a ‘peg’ to write to your MP to raise your deep concerns about the Bill and request a meeting. You can use the guidance and template letter (page 18) in the campaign pack here.
3) Join the Welcome Refugees 2021 rally outside Parliament
The rally is at 4.30 to 6.30pm on 20 October. Together With Refugees’ members, Solidarity With Refugees, Sisters Not Strangers, One Strong Voice, Women for Refugee Women and IMIX are organising a rally ‘to show the Government that we oppose this Bill, and that we want to live in a humane and welcoming society’. You can find more details here.
Countrywide reveal of orange heart displays
These activities will culminate in a countrywide reveal of orange heart displays signifying the breadth and depth of support for refugees around the UK, at the beginning of December. More details soon.
